Second, get familiar with the framework.

The spreadsheet has 4 tabs, one for each campaign type:

  • Search
  • Display
  • Shopping
  • Remarketing

Each tab contains a mix of:

  • Campaign build
  • Recurring optimisations
  • Bespoke optimisations

Here’s how these work:

  • Campaign build: Required tasks to create campaign
  • Recurring optimisations: Do these daily/weekly/fortnightly
  • Bespoke optimisations: Do these monthly

Campaign Building: Starting With Search

For service (lead generation focused businesses) and eCommerce brands:

Start off with the Google Ads Search campaign building.

In particular the account build and structure section.

In the order of which they appear:

  • Start with “Business analysis”
  • And work your way down to “First week optimisation pass”

This process will take you through the foundation of what makes a solid account and campaign structure, in particular:

  • Keyword research
  • Strategic campaign grouping
  • Campaign naming convention
  • Ad group creation and segmentation

Here’s an example of how this would look for a company selling mattresses in Australia:

Google Ads Search Campaign Structure

Getting this right will set you up for the best overall success long-term.

It’ll also give you an incredibly strong understanding of the active demand for your services/products and how this translates to a great campaign architecture.

From here you can move onto more advanced Search campaign strategies and other campaign types.

Campaign Building: Starting With Shopping

This is purely for eCommerce and DTC brands that want to first leverage Google Shopping campaigns.

Also keeping in mind you’ll need to be quite familiar with Search campaigns and how to build them.

(this strategy still requires you to be confident in building and optimising Search campaigns).

With this strategy:

  1. You first build your Shopping campaigns
  2. Activate and let them run for 1-2 months
  3. Review the “Search terms” report data
  4. Take the top performing keywords
  5. Use them to build Search campaigns

Here’s an example Search terms report and the performance metrics you should be focusing on, in particular:

  • Conversions
  • Cost / conversion
  • Conversion rate
  • Conversion value
  • Conversion value / cost

When building Search campaigns, remember:

  • Campaign themes
  • Campaign consolidation
  • Continuous optimisations

Build and craft your Search campaigns in a way that:

  • Compliments your Shopping campaigns and
  • Improves your overall account performance
